Spring 1 2023

Welcome to the Spring Term in Hazel Class.  We hope you and your families had a wonderful Christmas break.

Beware of the Big Bad Wolf!

Our theme for the first half of the Spring Term is ‘Beware of the Big Bad Wolf!’ For our first book this term we will be looking at Vlad and The Great Fire of London by Kate Cunningham which is closely linked to our History topic this term is The Great Fire of London. In support of this we are planning a visit to The Weald and Downland Museum (More information coming soon!)

For Hazel class second topic book will be exploring The Tin Forest by Helen Ward and this will be closely linked to our other curricular subjects.

Our science topic this term compliments both our learning in English and History as we focus on everyday materials.

Read Write Inc

We will be resuming daily phonics sessions this half term.  Year 2 will continue to build upon their current knowledge and understanding. We will be reviewing all set sounds.

Home Reading

Your child’s home reading books are linked to the sounds they are working on in their phonic group.  Home reading is therefore a great opportunity for you to practice these sounds at home with your child.   We would recommend that you take time to read with your child daily to support with fluency.  Please sign your child’s reading record after each read to indicate that your child has read with you at home.

In school we will aim to read with your child individually at least twice a week. We would therefore ask that your child brings their book bag along with their reading book and reading record to school every day.  We will change your child’s book every Tuesday and Friday

Hazel class will also have the opportunity to visit the library throughout the week to bring an additional book home. This opportunity provides your child to deepen their current vocabulary and widens their variety of texts.

If you have any questions or concerns please feel to contact me.

Warmest Wishes
