Welcome back! I hope you all had a great summer break! This letter will give you an insight into all the fantastic learning that will be happening in Chestnut class during the Autumn term.
This term our theme is ‘Would you love to live in a city?’ and in geography, we will be comparing the UK to North America. In art, we will be thinking about how typography works and will be creating our own maps.
In English, we have started a new scheme called ‘Ready Steady Write.’ We are currently looking at ‘Curiosity: The Story of a Mars Rover’ and the children will be writing a space journal narrative.
In reading, we will continue to focus on comprehension of texts weekly, looking at Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explanation, Retrieval and Summarising (VIPERS). The children will be learning about texts related to our topic, as well as looking at a variety of different texts.
Spelling, punctuation and grammar will be taught, which will then be linked to our theme and the English lessons, where children can use their learning in context. This will also be the same for handwriting.
We will be looking at a different group of spellings each week that follow the National Curriculum and these will be on the homework for the children to practise.
In maths, we have started the year by looking at roman numerals and place value. We will then be focusing on the four operations and starting some work on fractions.
In R.E, we are looking at Islam and our big question is ‘What does the Qur’an reveal about Allah and his guidance’. The children will be thinking about how Allah makes himself known to Earth.
In science, we are learning all about forces, focusing on friction and air resistance. The children will be planning and carrying out experiments based on this knowledge.
Just a reminder that our PE days are Monday and Friday.
Homework will be given out on a Friday and will be expected back by the following Wednesday morning.
