Welcome back! I hope you all had a great summer break! This letter will give you an insight into all the fantastic learning that will be happening in Chestnut class during the Autumn term.
This term our theme is ‘River Deep; Mountain High?’ and in geography, we will be researching how mountains are formed, why volcanoes erupt and spending some time looking at the water cycle. In art, we will be thinking about how we can use materials to represent mountain ranges.
In English, we will be creating mystery stories based on images in ‘The Mystery of Harris Burdick’. We will be writing non-chronological reports, monologues and narratives this half term.
In reading, we will continue to focus on comprehension of texts weekly, looking at Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explanation, Retrieval and Summarising (VIPERS). The children will be learning about texts related to our topic, as well as looking at a variety of different texts.
Spelling, punctuation and grammar will be taught, which will then be linked to our theme and the English lessons, where children can use their learning in context.
We will be looking at a different group of spellings each week that follow the National Curriculum and these will be on the homework for the children to practise.
In maths, we have started the year by looking at roman numerals and place value. We will then be focusing on the four operations and starting some work on fractions.
In R.E, we are looking at Christianity and our big question is ‘How do Christians show their belief that Jesus is God incarnate?’. The children will be thinking about whether they believe God to be human and divine and how he would live his life in the world today.
In science, we are learning all about materials and focusing on testing conductivity and insulation, magnetism, hardness, transparency and heat.
Just a reminder that our PE days are Monday and Friday.
Homework will be given out on a Friday and will be expected back by the following Wednesday morning.
If there are any questions, please feel free to ask after school.
Thank you,
Miss Coote (Class Teacher)
Miss Hawkes (Teaching Assistant)
